GRAND LAKE — The 3-pointers came fast and furious for the Hathaway Hornets, who made nine shots from long range in the first quarter to build an insurmountable lead in a 65-28 win over Westlake Friday in the Grand Lake basketball tournament.
Each of the last eight Hathaway field goals in the quarter were from long range as the Hornets scored 34 points in the quarter. Sienna Guidry and Lamiyah Sanchez each made a trio of 3’s in the quarter.
Guidry had 13 points in the quarter. Sanchez added nine.
Westlake had the score tied at 5-5 after the first 3 minutes before the Hornets exploded, scoring 17 consecutive points to take control.
“After we got warmed up and got going, our main shooter, Sanchez, hit two in a row,” Hornets head coach Courtneé Hollins said. “That got everybody going. We got hot after that and it felt like every time I looked up one was going in. We had a really good shooting night and it worked out for us.”
The Hornets forced turnovers with a full-court press and turned the possessions into baskets with quick passes around the perimeter to open shooters. Six players made at least one 3-pointer in the opening quarter.
Miller finished with 17 points while Sanchez added 14.
Hollins said her team has a mature approach despite Sanchez being the lone senior.
“We’re taking one game at a time,” she said. “I think in previous years we looked ahead. This season we talked about not doing that and focusing on one game at a time. We want to make sure we get better each game. So far we have been doing that so we are going to continue to focus on one game at a time.
“We have a very coachable team. They do what I ask them to do even if they don’t agree with it. They are hard workers, like most of our teams are. We are young, but they are eager to learn. It’s been fun to teach the young ones and watch them grow.”
Chaylee Beard scored 15 points for the Hornets.
Gabby Guillory led Westlake with eight points.
