“Though she be but little, she is fierce” – William Shakespeare
Kathleen “Kathy” Shaffer, 71, of Berkley, Massachusetts passed away in her home surrounded by her husband and children on Thursday, November 24, 2022.
Kathy was the oldest of her siblings and was considered the go to person for advice. She was a voracious reader, sometimes reading several books at once, of all genres, especially fiction and detective novels. In her younger years, Kathy enjoyed painting, and, in her later years, she drew pictures of flowers in the places where she and her family vacationed. She enjoyed all types of music from opera, to Carole King, to the Rolling Stones. Curious about the world, she listened and read about anything that made her ask questions. Kathy was a strong yet sensitive and creative spirit. She will be missed.
Born in Torrance, California, she was the daughter of Lillian Pickard and the late “Ted” Pickard. Her family moved to Massachusetts when she was a small child. However, she never stayed in one place too long, and traveled across the United States in her younger years. As a result, Kathy attended a myriad of different elementary and high schools. She graduated from Somerset High School in 1968 and later went on to attend and graduate from Bristol Community College. After obtaining her Associate’s Degree in Nursing, she worked as a Registered Nurse in the Brockton VA Hospital. One of the last churches Kathy attended was St. Joseph Church in Fall River, MA where she sang in the choir. She was an active member of the Council on Aging in Berkley.
Along with her husband of 47 years, David Shaffer Sr., Kathy leaves behind her three children David Shaffer, Jr and his wife Charlene of Pawtucket, RI; Amanda Poirier and her husband James III of Cranston, RI; and Brigitte Shaffer and her partner Ryan Potter of Providence, RI. She also leaves her two grandchildren; Elliot Poirier and Elle Shaffer, whom she loved very much. She was the sister of Cheryl Califano of Milford, MA; Lisa Pickard of Somerset, MA; Steven Pickard of Assonet, MA; James Pickard and his wife Karen of Swansea, MA; John Pickard and his wife Gina of St. Petersburg, FL; and the late “Joey” Pickard. She was also the loving niece of the late Lorraine Powers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Kathy on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 10:00am in St Joseph Church 1335 N. Main St Fall River, MA 02720. Burial will immediately follow in the Assonet Burial Ground. Donations in Kathy’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army 636 County St Taunton, MA 02780. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Crapo Hathaway Funeral Home 350 Somerset Ave Taunton, MA 02780.
